What a septic system is
Also called an on-site wastewater system, a septic system is installed mostly in rural areas where no municipal sewer exists. It usually consists of a concrete tank and an underground drainfield that disposes of wastewater on site. In Idaho, individual septic systems must be installed by a licensed installer.

Apply for a permit from your local Public Health District. The county applications below include full instructions.

Installation
A licensed installer — that's us — excavates, sets the tank, and builds the drainfield to the approved design.

Inspection
Once installed, the system is inspected and signed off by your local Public Health District.

Maintenance
Generally speaking, you should have your septic tank pumped every five years to keep the system healthy and avoid drainfield damage.
